We’re thrilled to announce that our beautiful brindle girl, Jr CH Lexus Dos Reis Da Fonte, affectionately known as Ada, has successfully passed her OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) Patellar Luxation Evaluation with Normal results!

Ada’s Results
Last week, Ada attended the OFA Health Clinic hosted by Westside Village Animal Hospital for a Patellar Luxation Evaluation. As every breeder hopes, she passed with flying colors. The examination results submitted indicate that no evidence of patellar luxation was recognized.

What is Patellar Luxation?

Patellar luxation occurs when the kneecap (patella) dislocates or pops out of place within the knee joint.

​Understanding the OFA Preliminary Evaluation

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals provides preliminary evaluations for dogs under 24 months to assess hip conformation. This is invaluable for breeders and owners who wish to make informed decisions about breeding, showing, or placing dogs in pet homes.

Key Points about Preliminary Evaluations

• Age of Evaluation: Dogs can be evaluated as young as 4 months.
• Reliability: The reliability of these evaluations increases with age. For normal hip conformation, reliability is 89.6% at 3-6 months, 93.8% at 7-12 months, and 95.2% at 13-18 months.
• Grading Scheme: Hips are classified as Excellent, Good, Fair (all within normal limits), Borderline, Mild, Moderate, or Severe (the last three indicating dysplasia).

Ada’s Results

Last week, Ada attended the OFA Health Clinic hosted by Westside Village Animal Hospital for a Preliminary Hip Dysplasia Evaluation. As every breeder hopes, she passed.  Ada’s evaluation returned a consensus of FAIR, which is within normal limits and indicates no radiographic evidence of hip dysplasia. This is great news for her future and our breeding program.

Hip screenings are crucial in ensuring the health and longevity of breeds prone to hip dysplasia. The OFA uses precise radiographic techniques to assess hip joint conformation and identify any potential issues early on.

Ada’s successful evaluation underscores our commitment to responsible breeding practices. Breeding correct, typey, and healthy dogs is a delicate balancing act that requires informed decision-making. Our comprehensive health testing serves as a vital tool, providing essential information to guide our breeding program. Rather than simply determining whether a dog should be bred, these tests offer valuable insights that allow us to make well-informed choices. By utilizing this information, we aim to contribute to the overall improvement of the breed and ensure the well-being of future generations, demonstrating our dedication to ethical breeding practices and the long-term health of the breed.

​We are thrilled to share that our French Bulldog, Kofi, made a special appearance on NBA on TNT! Alongside his flash mob of furry friends, Kofi joined the show for a fun and memorable segment.

Ada’s Eye Exam Success

Yesterday, Ada attended the OFA Health Clinic hosted by Westside Village Animal Hospital for a Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER) evaluation. As every breeder hopes, she passed with flying colors. The exam was straightforward and uncomplicated:

• Dilation drops were placed in each eye.
• After a 10-minute wait, the examination began.
• Most of the exam took place in a darkened room.
• Ada remained calm and showed no signs of distress throughout.

This successful eye clearance is an important milestone for Ada and our breeding program. It confirms she has healthy eyes free from inheritable conditions, which is crucial for producing quality puppies.

The Importance of Genetic and Health Screening

Breeding involves many factors, with the main goal being to improve the breed through intentional and purposeful matching of the Dam and Sire’s strengths and weaknesses. Genetic and health screenings are crucial tools in this process.

Did You Know?

• You don’t have to wait for show clinics to get OFA eye exams. You can find a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist in your area through the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists website.
• There’s no minimum age requirement for these eye exams—puppies can be examined as soon as their eyes are open. The examining ophthalmologist determines if a puppy is ready.
• The OFA’s Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER) maintains a database of eye examination results.

Ada’s achievement not only highlights her health but also reinforces our commitment to responsible breeding practices. We’re excited about what the future holds for her and our program!

Guardianship of a show-quality French Bulldog is a truly unique and rewarding experience.  As responsible preservation breeders, we are offering the opportunity to place show prospects, semi-active breeding contributors, and retired veterans in homes and families at no purchase cost.  These French Bulldogs can thrive as cherished members of the family.  Instead of purchasing a French Bulldog, potential show prospects or finished Champions are entrusted to guardian homes with the expectation of the same care and love that any happy, healthy French Bulldog would receive.  Occasionally, the show prospect will be temporarily back in our care to attend shows to attain their Championship status.  Imagine having the breeder's pick of the litter!

We ask that we be able to continue our very important bloodlines.  At no cost to the guardian home, we would complete all health clearances, championship titles, and other breeding precursors.  What this means to a potential guardian home is that we would have puppies from a female, and use males at stud occasionally.  Typically, the guardian home would be without their French Bulldog for a short period while we work to secure the future of this breed.

Conversely, breeders with disparate objectives adhere to distinct practices and motives, and it is imperative for us to preclude the exploitation of our established breeding lines. Thus, it is paramount for us to judiciously select breeding partners to ensure the existence of shared breeding principles and objectives, all serving to perpetuate the sanctity of our pedigrees.

The main goal is to improve the breed through intentional and purposeful breeding by matching the strengths and weaknesses of the Dam and Sire. One factor is genetic and health screening. While most of the former are probability markers and not definitive diagnoses, genetic and health screening both offer additional decision-making tools and are essential to ensure healthy dogs in the generations to come!
