Eyes on Excellence: Puppy Wellness, Atlanta Adventures & OFA CAER Success

8/20/2025

Last week, our Mafi x Ada litter had their biggest day yet—a city trip that tested not only their health but all the hands-on work our family has put in since their very first days.

We braved Atlanta’s legendary traffic first thing in the morning, heading off for a full schedule of eight-week wellness checks at Westside Village Animal Hospital and OFA Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER) exams at BluePearl Pet Hospital – Johns Creek. The girls handled the long car rides, new environments, and stacked appointments like seasoned travelers—honestly, better than their humans! (No shame: we wanted to cry the last 20 minutes on the way home—it was such a long day!)

Our results were worth every mile. At their wellness exams with Ana Adams, DVM, MS, Diplomate, ACT, each puppy received a glowing report: healthy, bright and alert temperament, body conditions and weights right on track, normal heart and fecal screenings, and their first puppy shots.
The afternoon was devoted to eye exams with Dr. Ellen Belknap, DVM, MS, DACVIM (LAIM), DACVO, where every puppy—now a third generation in their line to be OFA eye tested—passed with flying colors.

We credit their calm, confident attitudes to all the early crate training, car rides, gentle hands-on handling, exposure to different sounds, and careful socialization that me and my family provide each day. These experiences really do make for puppies who can adapt to anything.

If you’re curious about the CAER process, you don’t have to wait for breeder clinics—find a certified veterinary ophthalmologist at www.acvo.org, and learn more about inherited eye disease screening at www.ofa.org.

We couldn’t be prouder of these sound, healthy, and happy Frenchies—ready for whatever adventure comes next!

Exciting updates about our upcoming Spring 2025 litter!

Spring Edition 2025
Our Waitlist is Open

There are many different factors that go into breeding. The main goal is to improve the breed through intentional and purposeful breeding by matching the strengths and weaknesses of the Dam and Sire. One factor is genetic and health screening. While most of the former are probability markers and not definitive diagnoses, genetic and health screening both offer additional decision-making tools and are essential to ensure healthy dogs in the generations to come!

Looking ahead to our Spring 2025 breeding season, our family welcomed the beautiful brindle Jr CH Lexus Dos Reis Da Fonte aka Ada into our home. At 14 months, she became Portugal's #1 JUNIOR CHAMPION and:

QUALIFIED CRUFTS '25
JUNIOR LISBOA WINNER '24
PUPPY CPC WINNER '23
BEST IN SHOW YOUNG PROMISE

Now that we've secured her conformation title and health screening, we plan to line breed her with:

Mafi aka CH Eastham's Open The Big Show, CHIC 197699

It is a rarity when every puppy in a litter is a show prospect...
It is a phenomenon when this occurs, especially if the litter is a singleton!

We bred our handsome black masked fawn Mafi's older maternal half-brother and half-sisters. We let them grow out to see what they inherited from their Dam and Sire and learn what we wanted to improve upon. We were pleased with that litter. We got what we had hoped and discovered what more we should expect. We ultimately decided to choose a Sire that shared the same bloodline as that litter but had the improvements we had learned to expect, which for this breeding were mainly improved rear quarters and a more pronounced topline. We also wanted this Sire to be older so that we could understand what his offspring inherited and what they genuinely passed along. This intense pedigree study is how we found the Sire for Mafi's litter, the maternal half-uncle to the Sire of our Dam's previous litter.

We couldn't be more proud!

Out of Multi-AKC Major-Pointed, Best of Opposite Winner over a lovely group of champions, including Nationally ranked Top Ten Specials and FBDCA Designated Specialty Best of Opposite Winner in Sweepstakes, Multi-American Champion producer Miss Dior von Habox, and sired by imported frozen semen collected in 2018, Mafi is the first American-bred son of World Winner and Multi-Champion Mafioso Del Novizala. He has earned American Dog Show Best Puppy and Best Puppy Group 4 Winner (200+ Competitors), and wrapped up his Championship Title with Four Majors!

This breeding represents a culmination of our careful selection process, intensive pedigree study, and dedication to producing French Bulldogs that carry forward the best qualities of their distinguished lineage in both health and conformation. This embodies our commitment to "Companionship at its best". To begin your

The French Bulldog Blueprint | Metro Atlanta, USA

1/1/2025

We at Eastham's Open French Bulldogs are thrilled to announce the launch of our latest initiative: "The French Bulldog Blueprint | Metro Atlanta, USA". As dedicated preservation breeders specializing in European French Bulldogs, we've long been committed to protecting and promoting the breed standards. Now, we're expanding our mission to create a hub for education, advocacy, and support for French Bulldog enthusiasts across Metro Atlanta.
Picture
The Catalyst for Change

Our journey began in Peachtree City, Georgia, where we've been meticulously breeding French Bulldogs that exemplify the standards set forth by the AKC and FCI. However, a recent encounter in Stockbridge sparked a realization: our community needed more. We came across a litter of French Bulldog puppies being offered for sale, several suffering from untreated cherry eye—a preventable condition that highlighted a critical gap in breed education and responsible ownership practices in our region.

Expanding Our Vision

As participants in groundbreaking research initiatives, including the OFA Spine Database pilot study and Purdue University's veterinary research project, we've always understood the importance of advancing French Bulldog health. "The French Bulldog Blueprint" is a natural extension of this commitment, aiming to:

  • Elevate Breed Standards: Share our expertise in health testing, conformation, and ethical breeding practices with a wider audience.
  • Promote Health Advocacy: Leverage our involvement in spinal health research to educate owners about common health concerns and preventive care.
  • Foster Community Connections: Create opportunities for French Bulldog enthusiasts to learn, share experiences, and celebrate these remarkable dogs.

A Call to Action

We invite all French Bulldog lovers in Metro Atlanta—from experienced breeders to first-time owners—to join us in this endeavor. By pooling our knowledge and passion, we can ensure a brighter, healthier future for French Bulldogs in our area.Looking AheadIn the coming months, we'll be organizing educational seminars, health clinics, and community events. Our goal is to make Metro Atlanta a beacon of excellence in French Bulldog breeding and ownership, setting a standard that others will aspire to follow.

As we embark on this new chapter, we remain committed to the principles that have always guided Eastham's Open French Bulldogs: integrity, education, and an unwavering dedication to the breed we love. Together, we can create a community where every French Bulldog receives the care, understanding, and appreciation they deserve.

Stay tuned for updates and opportunities to get involved. The future of French Bulldogs in Metro Atlanta is bright, and it starts with us.

A Special Farewell

This year marked a bittersweet transition as our beloved foundation dam, Miss Dior von Habox (Lily), began her well-deserved retirement in Germany. As the mother of two remarkable champions - CH Eastham's Open Let Me Tell You 'Bout My Jesus, CHIC 183729 (Lee) and CH Eastham's Open The Big Show, 197699 (Mafi) - her legacy in our program is invaluable. We are forever grateful to Adrian Hodorogea of Kennel von Habox, not only for entrusting us with this exceptional French Bulldog but for a friendship that has enriched our lives beyond measure. Lily now brings joy and much-needed companionship to our widowed mother-in-law, embodying the true essence of "Companionship at its Best" in her retirement years.

Looking Forward

We are thrilled to announce our planned Spring 2025 breeding between Ada and Mafi! To our wonderful waitlist families - we are excited to share this journey with you as we welcome the new year. Our commitment to "Companionship at its Best" continues through careful breeding selection, comprehensive health testing, and a commitment to continuous improvement with each generation. We look forward to keeping you updated as we prepare for your future family member.

While 2024 taught us valuable lessons about true friendship, it also showed us the strength of genuine connections. Here's to cherishing true bonds and embracing new connections in the year ahead!

Warmest wishes for 2025,

Jerel, Lily & Mason

Eastham's Open French Bulldogs Contributing to Groundbreaking Spinal Research

12/10/2024

We are thrilled to announce our French Bulldog breeding program's participation in two significant research initiatives focused on spinal health. Our Bred-By French Bulldogs are contributing to both the OFA Spine Database pilot study, endorsed by the French Bulldog Club of America, and an innovative research project at Purdue University's College of Veterinary Medicine.
Research Impact
Purdue University Study

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue University has specifically sought French Bulldogs for their comprehensive spine study. Their research focuses on various spinal phenotypes, with particular interest in hemivertebrae - a condition where vertebrae develop incompletely. While hemivertebrae in French Bulldogs typically remain asymptomatic and are often discovered incidentally during routine imaging, their study holds profound implications for both canine and human health.

One Health Approach
The genetic structure of dog breeds provides researchers with a unique opportunity to understand the genetics behind vertebral anomalies. This research is particularly valuable because hemivertebrae occur in both dogs and humans, though with different impacts due to our distinct anatomical structures. The findings from studying French Bulldogs could potentially accelerate discoveries that benefit human spinal health.

OFA Database Contribution
Our participation in the OFA Spine Database pilot study helps track the prevalence of vertebral anomalies within the French Bulldog breed. This initiative is crucial for understanding the inherited aspects of these conditions and improving breeding practices for healthier future generations.

Commitment to Health
By participating in these studies, our breeding program demonstrates our dedication to advancing both veterinary and human medical knowledge. We're proud that our French Bulldogs are contributing to research that could potentially improve the understanding of spinal conditions across species.

Ada Passes OFA Preliminary Patellar Luxation Evaluation!

10/22/2024

We’re thrilled to announce that our beautiful brindle girl, Jr CH Lexus Dos Reis Da Fonte, affectionately known as Ada, has successfully passed her OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) Patellar Luxation Evaluation with Normal results!
Picture
Ada’s Results
Last week, Ada attended the OFA Health Clinic hosted by Westside Village Animal Hospital for a Patellar Luxation Evaluation. As every breeder hopes, she passed with flying colors. The examination results submitted indicate that no evidence of patellar luxation was recognized.

What is Patellar Luxation?

Patellar luxation occurs when the kneecap (patella) dislocates or pops out of place within the knee joint.
This condition can affect one or both knees and is often noticeable by a knock-knee stance. It can be present in animals as young as eight weeks old. The condition may involve laxity of the medial collateral ligament and thickening of the medial retinacular tissues, causing the foot to twist laterally under weight.

Commitment to Responsible Breeding

Ada’s successful evaluation underscores our commitment to responsible breeding practices. Breeding correct, typey, and healthy dogs is a delicate balancing act that requires informed decision-making. Our comprehensive health testing serves as a vital tool, providing essential information to guide our breeding program. Rather than simply determining whether a dog should be bred, these tests offer valuable insights that allow us to make well-informed choices. By utilizing this information, we aim to contribute to the overall improvement of the breed and ensure the well-being of future generations, demonstrating our dedication to ethical breeding practices and the long-term health of the breed.

We couldn’t be prouder of Ada and look forward to her bright future!
