We’re thrilled to announce that our beautiful brindle girl, Jr CH Lexus Dos Reis Da Fonte, affectionately known as Ada, has successfully passed her OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) Patellar Luxation Evaluation with Normal results! Ada’s Results Last week, Ada attended the OFA Health Clinic hosted by Westside Village Animal Hospital for a Patellar Luxation Evaluation. As every breeder hopes, she passed with flying colors. The examination results submitted indicate that no evidence of patellar luxation was recognized. What is Patellar Luxation? Patellar luxation occurs when the kneecap (patella) dislocates or pops out of place within the knee joint. This condition can affect one or both knees and is often noticeable by a knock-knee stance. It can be present in animals as young as eight weeks old. The condition may involve laxity of the medial collateral ligament and thickening of the medial retinacular tissues, causing the foot to twist laterally under weight.
Commitment to Responsible Breeding Ada’s successful evaluation underscores our commitment to responsible breeding practices. Breeding correct, typey, and healthy dogs is a delicate balancing act that requires informed decision-making. Our comprehensive health testing serves as a vital tool, providing essential information to guide our breeding program. Rather than simply determining whether a dog should be bred, these tests offer valuable insights that allow us to make well-informed choices. By utilizing this information, we aim to contribute to the overall improvement of the breed and ensure the well-being of future generations, demonstrating our dedication to ethical breeding practices and the long-term health of the breed. We couldn’t be prouder of Ada and look forward to her bright future! We’re thrilled to announce that our beautiful brindle girl, Jr CH Lexus Dos Reis Da Fonte, affectionately known as Ada, has successfully passed her OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) Preliminary Hip Dysplasia Evaluation with Normal results! Understanding the OFA Preliminary Evaluation
The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals provides preliminary evaluations for dogs under 24 months to assess hip conformation. This is invaluable for breeders and owners who wish to make informed decisions about breeding, showing, or placing dogs in pet homes. Key Points about Preliminary Evaluations • Age of Evaluation: Dogs can be evaluated as young as 4 months. • Reliability: The reliability of these evaluations increases with age. For normal hip conformation, reliability is 89.6% at 3-6 months, 93.8% at 7-12 months, and 95.2% at 13-18 months. • Grading Scheme: Hips are classified as Excellent, Good, Fair (all within normal limits), Borderline, Mild, Moderate, or Severe (the last three indicating dysplasia). Ada’s Results Last week, Ada attended the OFA Health Clinic hosted by Westside Village Animal Hospital for a Preliminary Hip Dysplasia Evaluation. As every breeder hopes, she passed. Ada’s evaluation returned a consensus of FAIR, which is within normal limits and indicates no radiographic evidence of hip dysplasia. This is great news for her future and our breeding program. Importance of Hip Screening Hip screenings are crucial in ensuring the health and longevity of breeds prone to hip dysplasia. The OFA uses precise radiographic techniques to assess hip joint conformation and identify any potential issues early on. We’re thrilled to announce that our beautiful brindle girl, Jr CH Lexus Dos Reis Da Fonte aka Ada, recently passed her OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) Basic Cardiac exam with excellent results! Ada’s Basic Cardiac Exam Success
Last week, Ada attended the OFA Health Clinic hosted by Westside Village Animal Hospital for a Basic Cardiac evaluation. Cardiac auscultation was performed by a veterinary cardiologist. As every breeder hopes, she passed without missing a beat. The veterinary cardiologist performed the cardiac auscultation in a quiet, distraction-free environment. Ada was standing and restrained, without the use of sedative drugs. The veterinary cardiologist allowed Ada time to acclimate to the environment. Auscultation Process The veterinary cardiologist identified the cardiac valve areas for auscultation and gradually moved the stethoscope across all valve areas. They also auscultated over the subaortic area, ascending aorta, pulmonary artery, and the left craniodorsal cardiac base. After examining the left precordium, the right precordium was examined. Specific Valve Areas Examined: 1. Mitral valve area: Located over and immediately dorsal to the palpable left apical impulse. 2. Aortic valve area: Positioned dorsal and one or two intercostal spaces cranial to the left apical impulse. 3. Pulmonic valve area: Situated ventral and one intercostal space cranial to the aortic valve area. 4. Tricuspid valve area: A relatively large area located on the right hemithorax, opposite and slightly cranial to the mitral valve area. The veterinary cardiologist also auscultated along the ventral right precordium and over the right craniodorsal cardiac border. Breeding involves many factors, with the main goal being to improve the breed through intentional and purposeful matching of the Dam and Sire’s strengths and weaknesses. Genetic and health screenings are crucial tools in this process. By passing the Basic Cardiac evaluation with flying colors, Ada demonstrated no significant abnormalities during this thorough auscultation process performed by the veterinary cardiologist. Ada’s achievement not only highlights her health but also reinforces our commitment to responsible breeding practices. We’re excited about what the future holds for her and our program! Ada Passes OFA Eye Exam with Flying Colors!10/12/2024 We’re thrilled to announce that our beautiful brindle girl, Jr CH Lexus Dos Reis Da Fonte aka Ada, recently passed her OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) eye exam with excellent results! Ada’s Eye Exam Success
Yesterday, Ada attended the OFA Health Clinic hosted by Westside Village Animal Hospital for a Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER) evaluation. As every breeder hopes, she passed with flying colors. The exam was straightforward and uncomplicated: • Dilation drops were placed in each eye. • After a 10-minute wait, the examination began. • Most of the exam took place in a darkened room. • Ada remained calm and showed no signs of distress throughout. This successful eye clearance is an important milestone for Ada and our breeding program. It confirms she has healthy eyes free from inheritable conditions, which is crucial for producing quality puppies. The Importance of Genetic and Health Screening Breeding involves many factors, with the main goal being to improve the breed through intentional and purposeful matching of the Dam and Sire’s strengths and weaknesses. Genetic and health screenings are crucial tools in this process. Did You Know? • You don’t have to wait for show clinics to get OFA eye exams. You can find a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist in your area through the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists website. • There’s no minimum age requirement for these eye exams—puppies can be examined as soon as their eyes are open. The examining ophthalmologist determines if a puppy is ready. • The OFA’s Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER) maintains a database of eye examination results. Ada’s achievement not only highlights her health but also reinforces our commitment to responsible breeding practices. We’re excited about what the future holds for her and our program!
