Eastham's Open French Bulldogs
We at Eastham's Open French Bulldogs are thrilled to announce the launch of our latest initiative: "The French Bulldog Blueprint | Metro Atlanta, USA". As dedicated preservation breeders specializing in European French Bulldogs, we've long been committed to protecting and promoting the breed standards. Now, we're expanding our mission to create a hub for education, advocacy, and support for French Bulldog enthusiasts across Metro Atlanta. The Catalyst for Change
Our journey began in Peachtree City, Georgia, where we've been meticulously breeding French Bulldogs that exemplify the standards set forth by the AKC and FCI. However, a recent encounter in Stockbridge sparked a realization: our community needed more. We came across a litter of French Bulldog puppies being offered for sale, several suffering from untreated cherry eye—a preventable condition that highlighted a critical gap in breed education and responsible ownership practices in our region. Expanding Our Vision As participants in groundbreaking research initiatives, including the OFA Spine Database pilot study and Purdue University's veterinary research project, we've always understood the importance of advancing French Bulldog health. "The French Bulldog Blueprint" is a natural extension of this commitment, aiming to:
A Call to Action We invite all French Bulldog lovers in Metro Atlanta—from experienced breeders to first-time owners—to join us in this endeavor. By pooling our knowledge and passion, we can ensure a brighter, healthier future for French Bulldogs in our area.Looking AheadIn the coming months, we'll be organizing educational seminars, health clinics, and community events. Our goal is to make Metro Atlanta a beacon of excellence in French Bulldog breeding and ownership, setting a standard that others will aspire to follow. As we embark on this new chapter, we remain committed to the principles that have always guided Eastham's Open French Bulldogs: integrity, education, and an unwavering dedication to the breed we love. Together, we can create a community where every French Bulldog receives the care, understanding, and appreciation they deserve. Stay tuned for updates and opportunities to get involved. The future of French Bulldogs in Metro Atlanta is bright, and it starts with us.

We are thrilled to announce our French Bulldog breeding program's participation in two significant research initiatives focused on spinal health. Our Bred-By French Bulldogs are contributing to both the OFA Spine Database pilot study, endorsed by the French Bulldog Club of America, and an innovative research project at Purdue University's College of Veterinary Medicine. Research Impact
Purdue University Study The College of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue University has specifically sought French Bulldogs for their comprehensive spine study. Their research focuses on various spinal phenotypes, with particular interest in hemivertebrae - a condition where vertebrae develop incompletely. While hemivertebrae in French Bulldogs typically remain asymptomatic and are often discovered incidentally during routine imaging, their study holds profound implications for both canine and human health. One Health Approach The genetic structure of dog breeds provides researchers with a unique opportunity to understand the genetics behind vertebral anomalies. This research is particularly valuable because hemivertebrae occur in both dogs and humans, though with different impacts due to our distinct anatomical structures. The findings from studying French Bulldogs could potentially accelerate discoveries that benefit human spinal health. OFA Database Contribution Our participation in the OFA Spine Database pilot study helps track the prevalence of vertebral anomalies within the French Bulldog breed. This initiative is crucial for understanding the inherited aspects of these conditions and improving breeding practices for healthier future generations. Commitment to Health By participating in these studies, our breeding program demonstrates our dedication to advancing both veterinary and human medical knowledge. We're proud that our French Bulldogs are contributing to research that could potentially improve the understanding of spinal conditions across species. Pup Cups for Everyone!10/30/2024 Rankings are out and our beautiful Ada remains Portugal's #1 JUNIOR CHAMPION Bitch over a stunning lineup! Jr CH Lexus Dos Reis Da Fonte
aka Ada At 14 months, she became Portugal's #1 JUNIOR CHAMPION and QUALIFIED CRUFTS '25 JUNIOR LISBOA WINNER '24 PUPPY CPC WINNER '23 BEST IN SHOW YOUNG PROMISE OFA CAER Normal, OFA Normal / Clear for Cardiac Disease and Patellar Luxation, OFA Preliminary Hips Fair We couldn't be more proud! We’re thrilled to announce that our beautiful brindle girl, Jr CH Lexus Dos Reis Da Fonte, affectionately known as Ada, has successfully passed her OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) Patellar Luxation Evaluation with Normal results! Ada’s Results Last week, Ada attended the OFA Health Clinic hosted by Westside Village Animal Hospital for a Patellar Luxation Evaluation. As every breeder hopes, she passed with flying colors. The examination results submitted indicate that no evidence of patellar luxation was recognized. What is Patellar Luxation? Patellar luxation occurs when the kneecap (patella) dislocates or pops out of place within the knee joint. This condition can affect one or both knees and is often noticeable by a knock-knee stance. It can be present in animals as young as eight weeks old. The condition may involve laxity of the medial collateral ligament and thickening of the medial retinacular tissues, causing the foot to twist laterally under weight.
Commitment to Responsible Breeding Ada’s successful evaluation underscores our commitment to responsible breeding practices. Breeding correct, typey, and healthy dogs is a delicate balancing act that requires informed decision-making. Our comprehensive health testing serves as a vital tool, providing essential information to guide our breeding program. Rather than simply determining whether a dog should be bred, these tests offer valuable insights that allow us to make well-informed choices. By utilizing this information, we aim to contribute to the overall improvement of the breed and ensure the well-being of future generations, demonstrating our dedication to ethical breeding practices and the long-term health of the breed. We couldn’t be prouder of Ada and look forward to her bright future! We’re thrilled to announce that our beautiful brindle girl, Jr CH Lexus Dos Reis Da Fonte, affectionately known as Ada, has successfully passed her OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) Preliminary Hip Dysplasia Evaluation with Normal results! Understanding the OFA Preliminary Evaluation
The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals provides preliminary evaluations for dogs under 24 months to assess hip conformation. This is invaluable for breeders and owners who wish to make informed decisions about breeding, showing, or placing dogs in pet homes. Key Points about Preliminary Evaluations • Age of Evaluation: Dogs can be evaluated as young as 4 months. • Reliability: The reliability of these evaluations increases with age. For normal hip conformation, reliability is 89.6% at 3-6 months, 93.8% at 7-12 months, and 95.2% at 13-18 months. • Grading Scheme: Hips are classified as Excellent, Good, Fair (all within normal limits), Borderline, Mild, Moderate, or Severe (the last three indicating dysplasia). Ada’s Results Last week, Ada attended the OFA Health Clinic hosted by Westside Village Animal Hospital for a Preliminary Hip Dysplasia Evaluation. As every breeder hopes, she passed. Ada’s evaluation returned a consensus of FAIR, which is within normal limits and indicates no radiographic evidence of hip dysplasia. This is great news for her future and our breeding program. Importance of Hip Screening Hip screenings are crucial in ensuring the health and longevity of breeds prone to hip dysplasia. The OFA uses precise radiographic techniques to assess hip joint conformation and identify any potential issues early on. Ada’s successful evaluation underscores our commitment to responsible breeding practices. Kofi’s Exciting NBA on TNT Debut10/17/2024 We are thrilled to share that our French Bulldog, Kofi, made a special appearance on NBA on TNT! Star-Studded Host Lineup Kofi had the chance to meet some of the biggest names in sports broadcasting: • Shaquille O’Neal: The legendary basketball icon. • Ernie Johnson: The charismatic host with a flair for entertainment. • Kenny Smith: Known for his insightful commentary. • Charles Barkley: Bringing humor and candid analysis to the show. The Segment The segment, titled “Guarantee,” featured our adorable French Bulldog alongside his flash mob of furry friends, adding a playful twist to the evening’s broadcast. Their presence brought laughter and joy to both the hosts and viewers. Heartfelt Thanks A huge thank you to Georgia Animal Actors for their incredible work in preparing Kofi and his friends for this unforgettable experience. Their professionalism made everything possible. Kofi’s NBA debut was an absolute hit, and we can’t wait for more adventures with our superstar Frenchie! We’re thrilled to announce that our beautiful brindle girl, Jr CH Lexus Dos Reis Da Fonte aka Ada, recently passed her OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) Basic Cardiac exam with excellent results! Ada’s Basic Cardiac Exam Success
Last week, Ada attended the OFA Health Clinic hosted by Westside Village Animal Hospital for a Basic Cardiac evaluation. Cardiac auscultation was performed by a veterinary cardiologist. As every breeder hopes, she passed without missing a beat. The veterinary cardiologist performed the cardiac auscultation in a quiet, distraction-free environment. Ada was standing and restrained, without the use of sedative drugs. The veterinary cardiologist allowed Ada time to acclimate to the environment. Auscultation Process The veterinary cardiologist identified the cardiac valve areas for auscultation and gradually moved the stethoscope across all valve areas. They also auscultated over the subaortic area, ascending aorta, pulmonary artery, and the left craniodorsal cardiac base. After examining the left precordium, the right precordium was examined. Specific Valve Areas Examined: 1. Mitral valve area: Located over and immediately dorsal to the palpable left apical impulse. 2. Aortic valve area: Positioned dorsal and one or two intercostal spaces cranial to the left apical impulse. 3. Pulmonic valve area: Situated ventral and one intercostal space cranial to the aortic valve area. 4. Tricuspid valve area: A relatively large area located on the right hemithorax, opposite and slightly cranial to the mitral valve area. The veterinary cardiologist also auscultated along the ventral right precordium and over the right craniodorsal cardiac border. Breeding involves many factors, with the main goal being to improve the breed through intentional and purposeful matching of the Dam and Sire’s strengths and weaknesses. Genetic and health screenings are crucial tools in this process. By passing the Basic Cardiac evaluation with flying colors, Ada demonstrated no significant abnormalities during this thorough auscultation process performed by the veterinary cardiologist. Ada’s achievement not only highlights her health but also reinforces our commitment to responsible breeding practices. We’re excited about what the future holds for her and our program! Ada Passes OFA Eye Exam with Flying Colors!10/12/2024 We’re thrilled to announce that our beautiful brindle girl, Jr CH Lexus Dos Reis Da Fonte aka Ada, recently passed her OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) eye exam with excellent results! Ada’s Eye Exam Success
Yesterday, Ada attended the OFA Health Clinic hosted by Westside Village Animal Hospital for a Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER) evaluation. As every breeder hopes, she passed with flying colors. The exam was straightforward and uncomplicated: • Dilation drops were placed in each eye. • After a 10-minute wait, the examination began. • Most of the exam took place in a darkened room. • Ada remained calm and showed no signs of distress throughout. This successful eye clearance is an important milestone for Ada and our breeding program. It confirms she has healthy eyes free from inheritable conditions, which is crucial for producing quality puppies. The Importance of Genetic and Health Screening Breeding involves many factors, with the main goal being to improve the breed through intentional and purposeful matching of the Dam and Sire’s strengths and weaknesses. Genetic and health screenings are crucial tools in this process. Did You Know? • You don’t have to wait for show clinics to get OFA eye exams. You can find a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist in your area through the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists website. • There’s no minimum age requirement for these eye exams—puppies can be examined as soon as their eyes are open. The examining ophthalmologist determines if a puppy is ready. • The OFA’s Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER) maintains a database of eye examination results. Ada’s achievement not only highlights her health but also reinforces our commitment to responsible breeding practices. We’re excited about what the future holds for her and our program!
